The National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience began in 1965 when the U.S. Department of Labor contracted with the Center for Human Resource Research, The Ohio State University to conduct longitudinal studies of the labor market experience of four specific age-sex groups of the American population. Under a separate contract with the U.S. Labor Department, the Bureau of the Census was made responsible for the design of the sample, the field work, and data processing.
