Policy makers and researchers commonly set family economic self-sufficiency as a goal for welfare recipients, but the term is often not defined. The most common definition--not receiving welfare--is too narrow. A more inclusive measure of self sufficiency is needed if researchers are to predict which young persons will become economically self-sufficient adults.
