A Comparative Study of the Duration of Unemployment of Young and Middle-Aged Men Final Report, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor, 1979 Cohort(s): Older Men, Young Men ID Number: 367 Publisher: U.S. Department of Labor A number of hypotheses concerning the job search behavior of unemployed workers are tested in this study. The empirical literature on unemployment is reviewed and data from the NLS of Young Men (aged 14 to 24 in l966) and Older Men (aged 45-59) are analyzed. Variables examined include: duration of search, return to search, wage offer level, probability of receiving an offer, search cost, and length of horizon. The unemployment duration model and the acceptance wage model are presented and discussed in terms of these variables. Transition rate (i.e., the probability of moving from unemployed to employed status) is analyzed. Findings are summarized both from a policy perspective and as an indication of the efficacy of the hypotheses tested, and directions for future research are suggested. Search returned 1 items.
