This input (see, Design tab) field is identified by the labels Question Text: English (primary) and the Another Language? button just above it. It contains the text of the question being asked and may contain archivists/designer notes that add detail and description to the question to aid archivists/designers, exclusively. The notes in the question text are identified by /* .... */ which surround the notes. The notes never appear on the inteviewer's screen and never appear in post-data documentation phase (see, Documentation tab).
Use: In most question types it contains the question text that is read aloud to the respondent or silently by the interviewer (ALL CAPITAL LETTERS). Substitutions (a.k.a., "text fills") may be used dynamically in the text. During the design phase the substitutions are entered as 'symbolic' variables and during execution of the survey in the field their actual textual value is 'filled in' to the question text. Substitutions or text fills can be recognized by the following forms in the text field:
In one question type, the 'Internal Function' question type, which never appears on the interviewer's screen, the Text field contains internal computations that serve a variety of purposes such as calculations, comparisons, conversions, condition evaluation for skip patterns (branching) and loops, data transfers, etc. For more information, see the list of internal functions a.k.a., the Functions Index.
